The classic ‘Dirty Dozen’ watch, redefined with the new S5e Spitfire Escape. Commemorating one of the most daring escapes of WWII and features metal from Spitfire AA810… True history on the wrist, as we like to say at Zero West.

In 1943/44 allied POWs dug tunnels 300 feet long and 30 feet deep, shoring up with bed boards, using milk tins for air, and trolleys for dirt removal. Their 2x2-foot shafts featured pulley hatches and waterproofing using margarine tins - brilliant innovation that took over a year and enabled 76 men to attempt freedom from Stalag Luft III. The S5e Spitfire Escape, is testament to their resolve.

On 8 May 1945, after nearly six years of darkness, the news everyone had prayed for finally arrived - Nazi Germany had surrendered. Across Britain and Europe, streets erupted in celebration as people danced, sang and embraced strangers. In London, crowds so thick you could barely move flooded Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square.

This was more than victory - it was relief after years of rationing, blackouts and loss. A moment when ordinary people, who had shown extraordinary courage in air raids, on battlefields and on the home front, could finally breathe again.
Yet even in the joy, many reflected on those who didn’t live to see this day. The soldiers, sailors and airmen. The civilians in bombed cities. The millions lost in the Holocaust.

Eighty years on, VE Day reminds us that peace is precious, hard-won, and worth protecting. It’s a story we must keep telling - not just of famous battles, but of everyday courage and the resilience of the human spirit.

The 5th March 1936 was the first flight of R J Mitchell’s Supermarine Spitfire. Exactly 6 years later in 1942, one of Mitchell’s iconic fighter planes was being flown by Flight Lieutenant Sandy Gunn. It was unarmed…

Gunn’s Spitfire AA810 was part of the Photo Reconnaissance Unit (PRU) and, on this day in history, was tasked with finding and photographing the pride of Germany’s naval fleet – the Tirpitz.

Shot down on this dangerous mission by two Messerschmitt Bf109s, little did he know that this event would lead him to a place in a tunnel named Harry and legendary status in one of the greatest stories of WW2.

To honour this story and the bravery of the PRU, our new Spitfire Escape Watches feature plates cast out of rare material from AA810. Distinctive and integral to the watch case design they are unique and limited to 100 serial numbers per watch.
