Launched in November 2020 by Dr Roger W. Smith, Mike France and co-founder Alistair Audsley, the British Watch and Clock Making Alliance now represents the majority of British watch and clock making brands.  The alliance is the first trade body for British watch and clock makers, and members need to be brands that are producing and selling their own products.

From world-renowned horologists to new start-ups; from makers of exclusive mechanical timekeepers to design-led affordable watches; from rare finds to mass precision; from micro-brands to super-brands, the Alliance a providing a voice for all its members.

With fascinating stories emerging all the time, members all share an enthusiasm for the future of British watch and clock making.  With a resurgence driven by innovation, creativity and passion there are now more than 90 trading watch and clock makers around the British Isles.

In the first ever Bellwether survey of British horology commissioned by the British Watch and Clock Making Alliance and published by KPMG in 2021, they wanted to “establish a baseline for a sector that is clearly in resurgence. Our primary aims were to establish the size, scope and direction of heading for our sector; but, above all, to substantiate the return of watch and clock making as a distinct sector within the British economy”.

The report found that the British watch and clock industry is currently selling approximately 1 million timepieces a year with a combined revenue of about £100 million. With market growth being the principle objective of the Alliance they are aiming to grow the industry to 1 Billion.

Apprenticed to George Daniels, who is considered by many to have been the finest horologist in the world during his lifetime, Roger Smith is passionate about improving mechanical timekeeping and helping lead the resurgence of British horology.
