The AV1 Vulcan draws its inspiration from Avro Vulcan XM607 and its extraordinary role in Operation Black Buck. Its design combines the purposeful language of Cold War aviation with the mission details of the aircraft’s historic 1982 flight from Ascension Island to the Falkland Islands.

INSPIRATION & DESIGN
The black dial takes its cues from Vulcan cockpit instrumentation, with oversized luminous numerals, sword hands and recessed chronograph registers creating the clarity of a military flight instrument. Coordinates, date coding and mission markings reference the target at Port Stanley and Black Buck One.
At its heart is a direct connection to XM607 itself. Aluminium recovered from the aircraft’s wing elevon has been machined by Zero West into the dial chapter ring. Rather than simply commemorating the aircraft, the AV1 Vulcan carries an original part of it forward in a new mechanical form.

THE HISTORY
THE AVRO VULCAN
Designed as a high-altitude nuclear bomber at the beginning of the Cold War, the Avro Vulcan became one of the most distinctive aircraft ever operated by the RAF. Its enormous delta wing, four Olympus engines and unmistakable silhouette made it an icon of British aviation.
A VERY DIFFERENT WAR
When Argentine forces invaded the Falkland Islands in April 1982, the Vulcan was approaching retirement. An aircraft conceived to carry Britain’s nuclear deterrent suddenly faced an entirely different challenge: delivering conventional weapons against targets almost 4,000 miles from the nearest suitable British airfield.
OPERATION BLACK BUCK
The RAF devised an extraordinarily complex plan. Vulcans would fly from Wideawake Airfield on Ascension Island to the Falklands, attack Argentine positions around Port Stanley and return. Reaching the target required a carefully choreographed relay of Victor tankers refuelling both the bomber and each other.
XM607
Two Vulcans departed Ascension for Black Buck One on the night of 30 April 1982. XM607 was initially the reserve aircraft, but when the primary Vulcan was forced to turn back, Squadron Leader Martin Withers and his crew inherited the mission and continued south towards the Falklands.
THE LONG FLIGHT SOUTH
XM607 crossed thousands of miles of empty South Atlantic, receiving fuel seven times during the mission. Navigation, fuel calculations and the Victor tanker operation had to work together with extraordinary precision. Failure at a critical point could leave the Vulcan without enough fuel to return.
PORT STANLEY
Early on 1 May, XM607 approached Port Stanley airfield carrying twenty-one 1,000lb bombs. The aircraft crossed the runway diagonally and released its entire load in sequence. One bomb struck the runway, while others damaged the surrounding airfield and demonstrated Britain’s ability to strike the islands from extreme range.
THE LONGEST-RANGE RAID
XM607 returned safely to Ascension after 15 hours and 45 minutes in the air. At the time, Black Buck One was the longest-range bombing operation conducted under combat conditions — an extraordinary mission involving the Vulcan, Victor tankers and crews operating close to the limits of their aircraft.
XM607 LIVES ON
The Vulcan fleet retired shortly after the Falklands war, but XM607 survived. Today the aircraft is preserved at RAF Waddington, permanently associated with Black Buck One and one of the most ambitious long-range air operations ever attempted by the Royal Air Force.
