BRITISH ENGINEERING… The Battle of Britain of 1940 had been bravely won but it had taken its toll. The RAF’s heroic pilots were exhausted and Britain’s historic cities had suffered heavily from the continuous Nazi bombing missions. By 1942 the time had finally arrived to take the fight to Germany. What was needed? A tough warbird that could carry hefty munitions; reliably travel the cross-channel distance; out-manoeuvre flak and shake off the occasional hit; but most of all it needed to be made of British ingenuity and grit.

The FS-2 Flying Scotsman commemorates 100 years of

The FS-2 Flying Scotsman commemorates 100 years of this iconic locomotive. This beautiful timepiece is made with Flying Scotsman metal a project that was only made possible with our collaboration through the National Railway Museum part of the Science Museum Group who approached us last year.

Flying Scotsman is the most famous steam locomotive in the world and the first to haul the regular scheduled, non-stop service from Kings Cross London to Edinburgh and also the first to achieve an authenticated 100mph. A legendary symbol of design and engineering it’s a locomotive that evokes nostalgia for the romance of a bygone era of steam travel.

The FS-2 pays tribute to this through our 41mm watch case design that follows the successful house style of our 44mm range.

Q-Branch, the R&D wing of Zero West Watches, has been at it again! Tinkering with light and magic to create this cool ‘Lume Box’.

Made from laser-cut plywood and sprayed in midnight black, this great display cube incorporates a removable back, allowing easy access to change over watch models. But the real magic happens with a flick of a switch.

The ultraviolet ring light around the viewing porthole charges the X1 Super-LumiNova used on our dials and hands to give the brightest glow in low light conditions. It’s one of the many design attributes our timepieces feature, and now we will be able to demonstrate this glow through this custom ‘Lume Box’ when customers visit... It’s just one of the many creative Q-Branch projects we’ve been working on.

Introducing the new M1 Mosquito timepiece, paying

Introducing the new M1 Mosquito timepiece, paying homage to Operation Jericho, a low-level daylight raid by the RAF on Amiens Prison, 18th February 1944. This unique watch features rare Merlin crank shaft from Mosquito HX909 that flew on this famous mission, a true testament to the brave pilots and British engineering.

Operation Jericho was a top Secret mission, codenamed Ramrod 564, and would rely on precision bombing to blow the high prison walls and free 120 French resistance patriots due to be executed. The plan aimed to breach the high walls in two places, destroy the guardhouse and blow the prison at both ends. To succeed the operation would need three things: pilots skilled in low-level daylight bombing, aircraft designed for speed and manoeuvrability, and perfect timing!

On February 18, 1944, Operation Jericho unfolded as a breathtakingly bold Allied air raid during World War II, targeting the formidable walls of Amiens Prison in German-occupied France. The mission’s daring objective was to liberate resistance fighters and political prisoners facing imminent execution by the Gestapo. Executed with remarkable precision, de Havilland Mosquito aircraft from the RAF’s 2nd Tactical Air Force, supported by Hawker Typhoon fighters, braved treacherous weather and the risk of heavy collateral damage. Their bombs breached the prison walls and obliterated the guards’ quarters, allowing 258 of the 832 inmates to escape, although some were tragically recaptured or killed during their flight to freedom.

The audacity and execution of Operation Jericho continue to spark debate among historians. It showcased the RAF’s unparalleled prowess in low-level bombing and significantly bolstered the morale of the French Resistance. However, the operation’s underlying intelligence and necessity remain contentious, with doubts about whether the Gestapo genuinely planned to execute the prisoners imminently.
