S1 – Spitfire (1936)

FIRST FLIGHT

The S1 watch conveys the simplicity of the classic avionic dials found in the Spitfire cockpit. Housed in a precision billet machined matt black PVD case and matching ZW DSL lugs is a distinct black dial with period numerals and indexes, clearly defined avionics style hands, and a standout red tipped sweep seconds hand. The classic dial is framed by a simple brushed steel bezel ring and the hands and dial are highlighted with SuperLuminova X1 luminous pigment. The rear of the S1 watch has an inset engraved silver disc with technical plan view of a Spitfire encased with the graphic markings of a P8 compass.

The watch is powered by the stellar Swiss ETA 2824 automatic movement thus ensuring it never misses a beat. Hand and date adjustment are by a brass finished locking screw crown modelled on the joystick gun platform fire button, a feature once so familiar to those brave young RAF pilots during the Battle of Britain. The watch is fitted with a custom ZW aerospace grade rubber strap, bespoke stainless steel pin buckle and is limited to only 100 builds.

From the beautiful elliptical aluminium alloy skinned wings and sleek lines, to the unmistakable growl of its mighty Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 supercharged piston engine, the Spitfire epitomised the very essence and brilliance of Great British design. Growing up only a few decades after it flew in anger to protect our liberty, it was the stuff of our boyhood dreams and in our own tribute we have tried to capture the essence of this great example of British engineering in our S1 limited edition watch.

Reginald J Mitchell CBE, was an English aeronautical engineer who worked for Supermarine Aviation. Between 1920 and 1936 he designed many iconic aircraft including the Supermarine S.6B racing seaplane, but it will be the legendary Supermarine Spitfire that he will be remembered for most. The Spitfire became legendary during the Battle of Britain when the country fought for her life. Flown by brave young RAF pilots, the single seater Supermarine Spitfire fighter took to the skies to successfully defend our nation. Sir Winston Churchill said of those gallant pilots in his famous speech on the 20th August 1940, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few”
